Successful introduction of the Gaia-X demonstrator validation platform in collaboration with deltaDAO AG

17.06.2022

How can value chains be aligned for the future? What are the options to record and reduce the carbon footprint, and how can the resilience of supply chains be expanded? These and other questions relating to production and digitization were the focus of exciting discussions at HANNOVER MESSE. Around 75,000 visitors and 2,500 exhibitors met from 30 May to 2 June 2022 at the trade fair in Hanover, Germany.

At the EuProGigant booth visitors were able to immerse themselves in the world of the new Gaia-X data infrastructure and, through the on-site validation platform demonstrator, experience how data from two CNC machines at different locations flowed together via the platform and were made available securely and decentrally via the Minimal Viable Gaia-X Demonstrator (MVG) by deltaDAO AG.

At the trade show, the project team addressed the question of how medium-sized companies with an often small machine pool can benefit from a cross-company, sovereign exchange of information and optimise their machining processes in terms of tool wear and workpiece quality. With the help of the demonstrator validation platform, the team illustrated how two identically CNC machines at different locations perform an identical machining process to produce a demo component. A data set was generated for each manufactured workpiece and made available via the EuProGigant Gaia-X portal. This was subsequently available via the portal and could be used after concluding a data usage agreement.

The data set remained in the IT system environment of the data owner until the final purchase was completed. In the example of the EuProGigant use case, the data sets generated from the machining processes served as training data sets for the detection of tool condition anomalies. With the help of an algorithm, which was also available via the EuProGigant Gaia-X portal, a model was created from the process information of the machine data. It enabled an evaluation of the tool condition (intact or defective) and provided a report afterwards. In this way, companies can benefit not only from a timely tool change, but also from the security of a qualitatively well-manufactured component.

As a lighthouse project, the EuProGigant team successfully demonstrated the current state of technology implementation according to Gaia-X and thus contributed to a professional, public discussion about the development status of the European data infrastructure. This is also reflected in the consistently positive feedback from the booth visitors from politics and industry, who are convinced of the project progress and the commitment of the involved partners.
