The Technische Universität Darmstadt is a public corporation with legal capacity pursuant to § 1 Para. 1 in conjunction with § 2 Para. 1 No. 1. § 2 para. 1 no. 1 HHG (Hessian Higher Education Act of 14 December 2009, GVBl. I p. 666). Since the TU Darmstadt Act (Gesetz zur organisatorischen Fortentwicklung der Technischen Universität Darmstadt vom 05. Dezember 2004, GVBl. I S. 382, in the version of 14 December 2009, GVBl. I S. 699) came into force, it has been an autonomous university of the State of Hesse.

According to § 3 Universities Act 2002, the Technische Universität Wien fulfils the following tasks within its sphere of activity:  

• Development of the sciences (research and teaching), development and exploration of the arts, and teaching of the arts;
• education through science and through the development and opening up of the arts;  
• scientific, artistic, artistic-pedagogical and artistic-scientific vocational training, qualification for professional activities requiring the application of scientific knowledge and methods, as well as training of artistic and scientific skills up to the highest level;  
• training and promotion of young academics and artists;  
• Continuing education, in particular of graduates of universities;  
• Coordination of scientific research (development and development of the arts) and teaching within the university;  
• Supporting national and international cooperation in the field of scientific research and teaching as well as the arts;  
• Supporting the use and implementation of their research results in practice and supporting the social integration of results of the development and opening up of the arts;  
• gender equality and the advancement of women;  
• Maintaining contacts with graduates;  
• informing the public about the fulfilment of the tasks of the universities.
