Milestone meeting of project partners of the research projects surrounding the EuProGigant ecosystem.

Nußbach, February 28, 2024. The most recent milestone meeting of the project partners of the five research projects AMIDS, DIONE-X, EuProGigant, ESCOM and Flex4Res took place in February 2024 in Nußbach, Upper Austria. During this event, the latest developments and achievements of the individual research projects within the EuProGigant ecosystem were discussed.

Past achievements and current progress

At the milestone meeting, the current status and shared goals of the ecosystem were discussed. Following this, the past and upcoming events of the ecosystem were explained in more detail.

The specific milestones that were discussed were the connection and data collection (M5), registration in the Gaia-X architecture (M6), calculation methodology (Thea M1) and the necessary ecosystem technology (Thea M2).

The connection and data collection topics were presented by Thomas Trautner, Assistant Professor at TU Wien. In his presentation, Professor Trautner illustrated the constructed machines using the example of the Profitrainer. Following this, the concept of distributed/federated learning was addressed and a recent publication on these topics was highlighted.

Next, Stefan Dumss, Scientific Assistant at TU Wien, offered an introduction to the registration in the Gaia-X architecture. Initially, the different interoperability layers were tackled. Subsequently, the Gaia-X Clearing Houses were explained in greater detail to provide insights into compliance and the necessary references.

Furthermore, the development of the calculation methodology was highlighted by Lukas Nagel, Research Associate at PTW Darmstadt, with a special focus on the use case of the CO2 footprint. This involves the intensive investigation of a product’s emissions during its lifecycle and accordingly provides potential for savings of such. Special focus was given to the Pathfinder Framework as well as related standards and norms. All these aspects were explained practically using the example of an injection moulding machine, which was subsequently used to calculate a CO2 footprint.

Lastly, the evaluation of ecosystem technology was addressed. Regarding this topic, Paul Weißenbach, Senior Software Engineer at Posedio GmbH, presented relevant insights of the source code. Additionally, the necessary management of technical infrastructure of container applications was highlighted. The new developments in this regard lead to various benefits such as reduced downtime and autoscaling. Finally, the concrete setup and operation of the online application were demonstrated using Argo CD.

EuProGigant stands for “European Production Giganet for calamity-reducing self-orchestration of value creation and learning ecosystems”. The binational project was launched on March 1, 2021 and will run for four years. The aim is to establish a cross-location, digitally networked production ecosystem. The framework is provided by the Austrian program “RTI Offensive Big Data in Production” of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) and the German program “Development of Digital Technologies” of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK). EuProGigant is supported by a consortium from Austria and Germany. The consortium leaders are the Pilot Factory Industry 4.0 at TU Wien and the Institute for Production Management, Technology and Machine Tools at TU Darmstadt.
